8th West Wickham Cubs enjoy a fun packed and active programme and work towards a number of badges including the Chief Scout’s Silver Award.

The Cub section usually offers three Cub Camps a year, one of which will be under canvas. Cubs also participate in Scout Group events and days out such as Cub Fun Day at Gilwell Park.

When we meet:

  • Mondays from 19:00 to 20:15

Although we try to arrive before the meeting start time, we cannot guarantee being there early so please ensure a Leader is present before you leave your child.

Our Cub Leaders

Andy Preston (Cub Scout team leader)

I grew up locally, and whilst I hadn’t discovered the 8th, i have many fond memories of my youth in Cubs and Scouts. I first got involved with 8th West Wickham when my oldest son was a Beaver, helping out at meetings. I moved with him to Cubs, where I became a Section Assistant before running a Cub Pack. Its been amazing watching so many young people grow in confidence, and try new things in the 10 years i have been involved.

Scouting has also allowed me to try new things, and i have really enjoyed both paddle sports and target shooting, and am now a qualified instructor in both.

I am a parent to both an Explorer and a Scout, and my wife is part of the Beavers team. I love being outside, DIY, Gardening and spending time with family and friends. I have worked in Engineering, and Transformation with my most recent role being a company director.

Robert McHugh

I joined the 8th West Wickham as a Scout, after starting scouting as a Beaver and Cub with a Croydon District group.  I have been helping the Cub Team for 5 years, starting as a Young Leader and now as a Cub Leader.  I also volunteer at Frylands Wood Scout Outdoor Center, running activities like climbing and tomahawks. Scouting has given me amazing experiences, including attending the 24th World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia. I want to be able to pass on my passion for Scouting to the Cubs, allowing them to try new things. Outside of Scouting, I work as an Art and DT Technician and enjoy creative projects.

Andi Dodson

Having been a Venture Scout with the 8th West Wickham myself there was really no choice on which group my boys were going to join when they started their Scouting journey. They are now both flourishing as an Explorer and a Cub Scout.

I have never really been far from the 8th, having helped at their gang shows once I’d left Ventures, volunteering with the Beavers and being as an occasional volunteer with the Cubs. All of this has naturally led me to assume my current role, as an Assistant Team Leader with the Cub Team.

In addition to the 8th, I am also an Assistant Scout Leader with the 9th West Wickham, which is for children with Special Educational Needs and our weekly meetings are for Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Network Scouts.

Scouting provides so many opportunities to so many people and it’s extremely rewarding watching the Cubs try new things, grow in confidence and build strong friendships throughout not only their Cub journey but throughout their Scouting Life.

I love being outside, spending time with my family and friends and reading. In my other job I am a Senior Vice President for a large global Bank.

Jamie Cook

Hi, I’m Jamie (aka Chil), a Cub Leader at the 8th. I have been in the 8th West Wickham since I was six, having been a Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer. I’ve been with the Cub Section since 2019, initially as a Young Leader and becoming an Adult Leader when I turned 18, in 2022.

As an Explorer/Network member, I achieved my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award and my Kings Scout Award – leading to an amazing day at Windsor Castle, with many other Kings and Queens Scouts. Alongside being able to accomplish great achievements, I have made so many friends and even more memories through Scouting.

As a Cub Leader, I thoroughly enjoy being able to play a part, no matter how small, in making a difference in young people’s lives. Being able to create opportunities to take part in activities as well as creating a fun atmosphere is what Scouting is all about, and I’m thrilled to be able to enable that for our Cub Scouts, alongside the rest of the Cubs Team!
